If a borrower has a severe permanent disability that prevents them from participating in post-secondary studies and the labour force for the rest of their life, they may be able to have their student loans cancelled through the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit.
Enrolment is not automatic – a borrower must apply for the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit. Under this benefit, they would not be eligible to receive any additional Canada Student Loans, Canada Student Grants, or Newfoundland and Labrador Student Financial Assistance in the future.
